About Jediyana

Why Jediyana? - Hinayana, Mahayana, Vajrayana, Jediyana...we actively resist the creation of dogma and challenge ourselves to create a present and future we cherish in this moment, rooted in archetypes and values that transcend tradition.

We are not caught up in plot point analysis or details of the Star Wars universe but are inspired by the wisdom and heroes in stories of dramatic fiction. We are after the broader lessons as they apply to life.

Star wars is accessible to modern culture, and is a strong starting point for discussions and enlivening the philosophy of the Buddha’s teaching. It’s the vehicle not the destination, the means not the end.

Jediyana is pragmatic, putting the Dhamma in modern cultural context and inspiring the three  elixirs: generosity, compassion and wisdom, with their permutations: kindness, acceptance, and intuition, and the antidotes to the five hindrances: faith, confidence, creativity, patience, enthusiasm.

“Friendship, companionship, camaraderie that brings out the best in everyone is actually the whole of the holy life. When a person has admirable people as friends, companions, & comrades, they can (all) be expected to develop & pursue the noble eightfold path.” ~Upaddha Sutta

The Jediyana tradition derives from the teachings of the Buddha, who called himself the tathagata “one who has gone thus” and we admit we pick and choose what’s most important to us - so that would be Noble Friends and Skillful Speech for two.

Meditation Guidance
text info here, this is a collection of class notes from a meditation course Ven. Kalyana gave in Athens, Ohio several years ago and has used many times since then.

Meditation is but one of the Noble Eightfold Path, these paths are all interdependent and interrelated, in order to benefit most from meditation or mindfulness it is necessary to employ them all.  Modern pop culture versions don't achieve the tremendous lasting benefits unless the person
figures this out.

Jediyana Chants (chanting benefits the body, mind and spirit, provides a ready substitute for negative thinking, teaches and guides us along the Noble Eightfold Path, read about the benefits of chanting here.)
